Recordkeeping

2017

In Recordkeeping, materials are layered to suggest different meanings depending on whether the light source is turned on or off. Built for my senior exhibit at the Tweed Museum of Art, individual pieces mimic the x-rays found in a doctor’s office while the assembled piece is inspired by the participatory dioramas at field museums (“push this button and hear what a flicker sounds like.”) Viewers are encouraged to push the button to turn on and off each x-ray to see what is concealed and revealed.

The content on each piece includes a hand sewn human organ and layers of vintage illustrations, maps, text or personal photographs. Many of the illustrations are from a book on how to prepare and preserve insects for natural history collections.

Individual pieces from Recordkeeping have been shown in juried exhibits and other pieces, including their presence in Catalog for my most recent (2024-25) exhibition, “(Re)Configure.”
