Plates

(2015-2024)

Plates are modeled after historical natural history books which often paired with descriptive text about a species alongside illustrations that provided visual knowledge. These encyclopedic books opened up the wide world of nature for its readers, introducing wonder about and establishing control over the depicted subjects. For the plates shown here, animal and human data and anatomy are intermingled to pose questions about contemporary relationships between humans and non-humans.

Each plate includes a collage of materials, such as cut vintage book pages, thread, gouache, colored pencil, graphite and printer ink. From the collection, the first piece in the series, is a limited edition lithograph with hand-sewn grids. Every illustration in the pair is framed to around 25”(w) x 34,”(h) and are hung together with 6-12” between them.
