Due to COVID, the gallery space has been closed as of November 20 for at least one month. The last two livestreams have been changed to a pre-recorded video to be shared soon.
Integument, a solo exhibit of new installation art, is on view for the next few months in the Duluth Art Institute’s George Morrison Gallery. Integument, which is the proper medical term for skin, also means any biological covering, like a husk or shell or hair. It is a protective barrier that suggests inside versus outside and a transitional surface that represents both growth and what gets left behind. The work in this show explores integument from both a material and biological point of view.

Integument: Solo exhibit of new work at Duluth Art Institute's Morrison Gallery this fall
My response to the pandemic was to retreat to my work. When the “lockdowns” hit, the solo exhibit at the Duluth Art Institute was already scheduled and the Projects Grant from Arrowhead Regional Arts Council (THANK YOU!) already received. I was lucky to be able to put my head down and produce.
With a little over a month away, the work is coming together and it is time to get the word out. While exact dates are still tentative, installation will begin early October. Folks are welcome to come through the space during this time but the work should be fully hung and ready to view by October 20, if not sooner.
Duluth Art Institute’s details: Located in the Depot Building in downtown Duluth, Minnesota at 506 W Michigan Street. Their hours are 10am - 3pm, Tuesday through Friday and they are following COVID-19 protocol (mask wearing, 6 feet, etc). DAI Member Show and 3D Collage Class

Archive is relevant to two pending events here in Duluth.
I will be holding a 3D Collage Class called What’s Your Wunderkammer on February 1. This course is a part of the yearlong exploration I have had with adding dimensionality to my existing process. Since paper has become my primary medium for this experience, I will be showing students different options for shaping paper while they get their hands involved with 2- and 3D collage.
This class and the research leading up to it are in part funded by an Artist Initiative grant that I received this past year from the Minnesota State Arts Board. In addition to shaping paper, I have been creating some portable art pieces as part of a suitcase diorama series. Archive is a result of this project and will hang at this year’s Member Show at the Duluth Art Institute in February.

Health and Human Services Conference - "Bravely Being Human"
I was honored to be the visual artist for the St Louis County’s Health and Human Services Conference this year. On view were a selection of new and old Arcana pieces as well as my Plates series. About 3000 participants attended the conference and were able to experience the work in between their workshops and lectures. It was a new environment for me and I was happy with the opportunity.

Strata Exhibit at Duluth Art Institute
Now showing through August 11, an exhibit about layers, curated by Amy Varsek at the Duluth Art Institute. Along with work from Natalie Salminen Rude, Juliane Shibata and Russell Prather, my piece “Fade” is on view. There will be an opening on June 4, 5-8pm
Materials include encaustic mulberry paper boxes with Duralar cutouts within, Pictorico cutouts of maps and text, hatpins and foam core.

Artist Talk at MacRostie Art Center
February 1, 2019: It took a few days to install Inventory in the front window of MacRostie. Outside, temperatures were plummeting below negative 20. Inside, I was baked by the sun while moving up and down the ladder to hang tags. On the opening night, a crowd of artists and art enthusiasts from the Grand Rapids area braved the cold (it was above zero finally) and attended the artist talks given by myself and the other exhibiting artist, Naomi Hart.

Reconfigure moves next to Grand Rapids, Minnesota for the month of February. Inventory, Coffer, Plates and Arcana Entomologica will all be on display in slightly new configurations to fit the space.

In my previous art life, I was worked solely with a camera and I produced a series of photographs called “Home Life” that looked at parenting from behind the lens. The work was recently discovered by the Dutch online journal, De Correspondent and will be used in an article to be published on December 24, 2018. The premise of De Correspondent is to have members, rather than subscribers, so it may be difficult to access the article. I will do my best to post links as I can.
Also note they are launching an English version, The Correspondent, in spring of 2019.

Inventory reconfigured
Working in multiples allows me to change how a piece is displayed from venue to venue. In the Kruk Gallery, I was able to hang from the ceiling and so Inventory moved off the wall (as it was at the Tweed Museum) and into the room to create a more interactive experience. The viewer can walk all around the piece and view the details from both sides.

Reconfigure
A busy autumn and full week of installation culminated in the solo show, Reconfigure, on display at the Kruk Gallery from November 8 to December 21. A part of the University of Wisconsin Superior, the gallery is a beautiful space and the director, Anne Dugan, is supportive of experimental and unconventional work.
