February 3, 2009: Joining the ranks

Well I finally created my own blog. I desperately want to update my website and am in the process of learning how. In the meantime, I will use the blog to post photos, ideas, thoughts, etc.

May 19, 2008: Transitional Spaces:

These spaces are in transition-- some person, their body or their business, has recently departed and another person has intentions to take over. During this moment, the story has maximum possibilities. The former occupants have left behind an incomplete record of themselves and the character of new occupants has not yet been established.

So far, the owners of three downtown buildings have allowed me to capture this pause between inhabitants.

The landmark Wilma Building during its conversion from apartments to condos, along with its former Red Light Green Room midway through its redesign.

The Royal, a 1950s motel being transformed into apartment rentals.

And the Artcraft building, a former publishing house with large workrooms.

My goal is to document these spaces with the simple observer aesthetic. I do not touch anything but the camera. I record straightforward angles of view. The subject is usually emptiness punctuated with small artifacts.

I enjoy this project because it is an opportunity to stand in between the past and the future.
